Besides being the month of love, February is Random Acts of Kindness month. Love and kindness should go hand in hand, and random acts of kindness are scientifically proven to positively impact yourself and those around you. Making the choice to be kind and focusing on compassion, not just for others but for yourself, can have a huge impact on mental health.
How does kindness facilitate better mental health outcomes? According to Psychology Today, kindness “releases neurochemicals associated with positive emotions.” These acts make both the giver and the receiver feel good, and experiencing kindness can help combat negative emotions and help people heal from trauma, PTSD, and depression, replacing their bad experiences with people with positive ones. Random acts of kindness, whether between strangers, romantic partners, parent and child, or friends, strengthen connections and foster a sense of community and trust and deepen already existing bonds. It helps people feel less alone and isolated.
Think about the time a stranger paid for your coffee, held the door open for you when you were carrying your groceries, or even smiled and said hello. It’s a nice feeling when others are kind. These spontaneous gestures of goodwill, no matter how small, can truly have the greatest impact on human connection.
Kindness is Free
Acts of kindness can be thought out or spontaneous, but never calculated. It’s not about kindness for the sake of doing something, it’s seeing an opportunity and seizing it without over thinking it and expecting nothing in return. A stranger dropped their phone at the gym without noticing, so you pick it up and hand it to them; someone at school spills their drink, so you go to get paper towels and help clean it up; your partner is running late getting home to make dinner, so you make it instead. The list is endless. Acts of kindness also create a ripple effect – when you are kind to others, it inspires them to pass it along.
Different Examples of Random Acts of Kindness
Below are different ideas on how you can integrate random acts of kindness into your life.
At Home:
- What’s a household chore that a family member does every day? Try taking it off their plate to give them a break, or buddy up and do it with them.
- Write a compliment note for a family member.
- Call a friend or family member that you haven’t talked to in a while.
In Your Community:
- Smile and say hello to someone.
- Hold the door open for someone.
- Offer to help carry groceries or heavy items.
- Return someone’s shopping cart for them in a parking lot.
- A simple “please” and “thank you” to retail and service workers you may interact with and leave a tip.
- Check with your local shelters and food banks and see what they are low on and donate.
At Work:
- Help a coworker who is struggling with a task.
- Send them a nice note or an email about why you enjoy working with them.
- Give a shoutout to a coworker and acknowledge the work they’ve done.
- Leave someone a handwritten note with a compliment or a motivational message.
By incorporating random acts of kindness into your day, you're not only making the world a little bit brighter, but you’re also taking care of your own mental and emotional well-being. It’s a simple yet powerful way to improve both your life and the lives of those around you. Happy Kindness Month!
