Last holiday season held special meaning for Josh*, a vibrant young man whose life has been shaped by the challenges of his past. Raised by a single mother with significant mental health issues and enduring the absence of his father, Josh has faced a lot at a young age and was uprooted frequently throughout his childhood.
Josh came to Nexus-Mille Lacs Family Healing because of aggressive behaviors towards his siblings and he struggled to regulate his emotions. He was lonely, lacked self-esteem, and felt unworthy of love. Ideas of suicide racked Josh’s brain as the question, “who could love me?” repeated in his mind. Despite these struggles, Josh’s emotional depth is evident; he wears his heart on his sleeve, craving the love and intimacy that come from family connections.
Josh finds stability and support from his grandparents in Missouri. This bond is a crucial part of his journey, offering him a sense of belonging and support. However, the distance makes it challenging for them to maintain that connection, especially during the holidays—a time when family bonds are often most cherished.
Reconnecting with family
In December 2023, a $200 request from YouthNOW, Nexus Family Healing’s employee giving program, illuminated the urgent need for a family reunion. The funds provided gas money for Josh’s grandparents to make the trip. When Josh heard of these plans, his emotional response was overwhelming. The thought of being together again also brought tears to his grandmother’s eyes, underscoring the importance of this visit.
Through coordinated efforts with the county, family assistance programs, and transportation funds from the Nexus Foundation for Family Healing, we were able to alleviate the financial burden that had kept Josh and his grandparents apart. The plan was to ensure they could spend quality time together over the Christmas break, sharing gifts, laughter, and the warmth of family—a stark contrast to the loneliness Josh often felt during holidays. When Josh's grandparents arrived at Nexus-Mille Lacs bringing not just gifts but their unwavering support, the joy in Josh's heart echoed through the walls. They went swimming at a hotel pool, an arcade, and enjoyed their time together around the Mille Lacs Lake area.
Josh was able to experience a “normal” Christmas with family for the first time in a long time. This visit symbolizes more than just a family reunion; it serves as a powerful reminder that love can bridge any distance. This celebration of connection, resilience, and love— is a memory that Josh will carry with him long after the season fades.
